The Porsche 356 A 1500 GS Speedster Carrera GT combined the pared-back character of the Speedster with the specialised engineering of Porsche’s Carrera models. Its low windscreen, open cockpit, and minimal bodywork gave it a more purposeful appearance than the enclosed 356 coupés, reflecting a preference for driver involvement over touring comfort. The Carrera GT designation added another layer of distinction, identifying a rare performance-focused version shaped by Porsche’s competition experience. Its appeal rested on this unusual combination of lightweight roadster design and sophisticated mechanical development.
For the 1958–1959 range, the Speedster Carrera GT used a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cam flat-four producing 108 hp and 91 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission allowed direct control of the engine’s output, while the rear-mounted powertrain defined its traditional Porsche layout. With its open body and specialised engine, this model offered a distinctly sporting interpretation of the 356, prioritising mechanical character and an engaging connection with the road.
