The Porsche 356 A 1600 Cabriolet brought open-air motoring to Porsche’s early sports-car lineup, combining rounded bodywork with a more relaxed character than the stripped-back Speedster. Its folding roof made it suitable for leisurely drives and longer touring journeys, while the compact proportions and understated styling retained the distinctive identity of the original 356 family. Rather than relying on dramatic design changes, the Cabriolet offered an appealing balance of elegance and everyday usability. It represents the straightforward, driver-focused approach that helped establish Porsche’s reputation during the 1950s.
Across the 1956–1959 range, this Cabriolet used a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre flat-four producing 59 hp and 81 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission gave the driver direct control over its modest output, while the factory-listed top speed was 99 mph. These specifications reflect the standard 1600 Cabriolet described in the current AutoSpecsHub page, rather than the higher-powered Super version. Its appeal rests on classic open-top character and uncomplicated mechanical design.
