The MG F 1.8i VVC brought a more performance-focused character to MG's lightweight mid-engine roadster, combining compact proportions with a high-revving four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. Its two-seat open-top design kept the focus firmly on driver involvement, while the rear-mid engine placement and double-wishbone suspension gave the car a balanced foundation for spirited driving. The VVC system added variable valve control to the 1.8-liter engine, helping make this version one of the more engaging models in the original MG F range.
The 1996–2002 MG F / TF 1.8i VVC uses a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter inline-four producing 143 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 7.0 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 7.2 seconds. Top speed reaches 130 mph, giving the lightweight roadster an appealing combination of high-revving performance, mid-engine balance and classic open-air driving character.
