The 1996–2001 Maserati Quattroporte 2.8 occupies an intriguing place in the Italian marque’s history, combining the presence of an executive sedan with the character of a compact twin-turbo powertrain. Its four-door, five-seat layout makes it practical enough for everyday use, while the longitudinal front-engine and rear-wheel-drive configuration gives it a distinctly performance-oriented foundation. The Gandini-influenced design also gives this Quattroporte a sharp, unmistakably Italian identity.
Power comes from a 2.8-liter bi-turbo V6 developing 280 hp and 293 lb-ft of torque, with buyers able to choose between a six-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmission. The sedan can reach 162 mph and accelerate from 0–60 mph in 5.7 seconds, figures that give it serious pace for a luxury four-door of its period. MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear suspension complement the rear-driven chassis, while 17.5 cubic feet of luggage space preserves useful practicality alongside its sporting character.
