The Maserati Quattroporte Royale was conceived as a more exclusive expression of Maserati’s luxury-sedan tradition, with its imposing proportions and V8 power giving it a distinctly grand presence. The 1987–1990 model combines a four-door, four-seat cabin with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, while its five-speed manual transmission makes the large sedan more engaging than its size might suggest. Traditional MacPherson-strut front suspension and trailing-arm rear suspension complete a chassis built around straightforward period engineering.
A naturally aspirated 4.9-liter V8 produces 296 hp and 296 lb-ft of torque, giving the Royale a 143-mph top speed and a 6.3-second 0–60 mph time. Its 4,273-lb curb weight reflects the car’s substantial luxury-sedan proportions, while four-wheel disc brakes provide the stopping power. With 21.2 cubic feet of luggage space, the Royale also offers considerable carrying capacity, making it a distinctive combination of Italian V8 performance, traditional rear-wheel-drive character, and full-size luxury-sedan practicality.
