The Chairman CM400S brought Mercedes-derived engineering to SsangYong's executive-car range, offering a more accessible entry into the marque's flagship saloon family. Its long, formal proportions, rear-wheel-drive layout and understated styling give it a traditional luxury-car character. Inside, the four-door body accommodates five occupants, while the substantial boot makes it practical for longer journeys. Rather than relying on visual excess, the CM400S focused on established engineering and a comfortable, composed driving experience.
For 1999–2001, its naturally aspirated 2.3-litre inline-four produces 148 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is delivered to the rear wheels, while the MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear setup provide the underlying architecture for its road manners. Its 124 mph listed top speed also gives this entry-level Chairman performance suited to relaxed motorway travel.
