The McLaren 650S Spider combines the aggressive character of the Super Series with the freedom of open-air driving, giving McLaren's performance-focused engineering a more dramatic road presence. Its sculpted body, low stance, and distinctive dihedral doors emphasize the car's aerodynamic purpose, while the carbon-fibre MonoCell provides the rigid foundation behind its sharp responses. Rather than treating the convertible format as a compromise, McLaren developed the Spider to preserve the character and capability of the 650S while adding another dimension to the driving experience. It stands as one of the defining open-top models from the company's first generation of modern road cars.
For 2015–2017, the 650S Spider uses a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 641 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Its 7-speed transmission drives the rear wheels, helping the two-seat convertible reach 204 mph. A 2.9-second 0–60 mph time gives the Spider serious supercar pace, while its double-wishbone suspension supports the precise handling expected from McLaren.
