The diesel-powered Tucson brought a different character to Hyundai’s first-generation compact SUV, trading some of the gasoline engine’s simplicity for stronger low-speed pulling power and better long-distance efficiency. The 2WD version kept the package focused on road use, using front-wheel drive rather than adding the weight and complexity of four-wheel drive. For 2006–2010, the Tucson 2.0 CRDi VGT stood out as a practical diesel SUV for drivers who valued relaxed cruising and useful torque more than outright performance.
Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four producing 138 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual or four-speed automatic sends power to the front wheels, while peak torque arrives at 1,800 rpm. That combination gives the Tucson a measured 10.7-second 0–60 mph time and the kind of low-revving response that suits everyday family driving and longer journeys.
