Not every Tucson from this generation was aimed at relaxed family motoring. The 1.6 Turbo 2WD gave Hyundai’s compact SUV a more energetic edge, using a small-displacement turbo engine to add pace while keeping the lighter front-wheel-drive configuration. That made it an interesting middle ground: it retained the upright seating and everyday practicality expected of a Tucson, but its turbocharged petrol engine brought a noticeably livelier response. For 2015–2020, this version showed how Hyundai was using downsized turbocharging to broaden the appeal of its mainstream SUV.
The 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four produces 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, with maximum torque available from 1,500 rpm. A six-speed manual transmission sends the power to the front wheels, and the SUV reaches 127 mph. Its 8.9-second 0–60 mph time gives this otherwise practical crossover a surprisingly brisk turn of pace.
