Some compact SUVs are built primarily for practicality, while others use a stronger engine to give their everyday character a little more energy. The Tucson 1.6 Turbo 4WD belongs to the latter group, combining a relatively small turbocharged petrol engine with the added traction of four-wheel drive. Its five-door shape keeps the emphasis on family usability, but the responsive engine and compact dimensions give this version a more lively personality than the lower-powered Tucson variants. It is an example of Hyundai using turbocharging to make a mainstream SUV feel more capable without moving to a larger engine.
The 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four produces 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, with peak torque arriving at 1,500 rpm. Six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmissions were available, while four-wheel drive puts the engine's output through all four wheels. A 9.2-second 0–60 mph time gives this Tucson a useful blend of everyday practicality and stronger road performance.
