The Mercedes 190 E 2.3 brought a larger four-cylinder engine to the compact W201 sedan, combining understated Mercedes-Benz styling with the solid engineering and balanced road manners that defined the 190 range. Its four-door body and five-seat cabin made it a practical choice for everyday driving, while the front-mounted longitudinal engine and rear-wheel-drive layout gave it the traditional mechanical character associated with Mercedes-Benz sedans of the era. Positioned below the more performance-focused 190 E 2.3-16, the 2.3 offered a calmer and more accessible interpretation of the W201.
The 1983–1988 Mercedes 190 E 2.3 uses a naturally aspirated 2.3-liter inline-four producing 134 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 10.0 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 10.3 seconds. Top speed reaches 124 mph, giving the compact sedan a balanced combination of smooth performance, rear-wheel-drive dynamics and everyday practicality.
