The Mercedes 190 D 2.5 Turbo combined the compact proportions of the W201 with the durability and stronger performance of a turbocharged five-cylinder diesel. Its understated four-door design and five-seat cabin retained the practical character of the 190 range, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive gave it the traditional mechanical balance associated with Mercedes-Benz. The turbocharged diesel also made this version a more capable long-distance sedan, blending useful torque with the refined, composed character expected from the brand.
The 1988–1993 Mercedes 190 D 2.5 Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five diesel producing 124 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 11.1 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 11.5 seconds. Top speed reaches 119 mph, giving the sedan a practical combination of diesel torque, rear-wheel-drive dynamics and efficient long-distance performance.
