The Mercedes 190 D 2.5 brought a larger five-cylinder diesel engine to the W201 range, combining the compact proportions of the 190 with the durability and practicality associated with Mercedes-Benz diesel models. Its understated four-door design and five-seat cabin made it well suited to everyday and long-distance driving, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive preserved the traditional mechanical character of the 190 family. The naturally aspirated five-cylinder engine gave this version a distinctive place within the early diesel lineup.
The 1985–1988 Mercedes 190 D 2.5 uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-five diesel producing 89 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 14.3 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 14.8 seconds. Top speed reaches 108 mph, giving the sedan a practical combination of diesel efficiency, relaxed performance and classic Mercedes-Benz refinement.
