The Mercedes 190 D continued the W201's reputation for solid engineering and understated practicality, pairing the compact proportions of the 190 sedan with a naturally aspirated diesel engine designed for economical everyday motoring. Its four-door body and five-seat cabin made it a practical choice, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive retained the traditional mechanical character of Mercedes-Benz. Rather than focusing on outright performance, the 190 D emphasized durability, efficiency and the composed driving manners that helped define the W201.
The 1988–1993 Mercedes 190 D uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four diesel producing 74 hp and 93 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 17.5 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 18.1 seconds. Top speed reaches 99 mph, giving the sedan a straightforward combination of diesel efficiency, traditional rear-wheel-drive dynamics and Mercedes-Benz refinement.
