The Mercedes 190 E 2.3 continued the W201's evolution into the late 1980s, offering a refined balance of compact dimensions, understated styling and traditional rear-wheel-drive engineering. Its four-door body and five-seat cabin gave it the practicality expected of a Mercedes-Benz sedan, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and well-developed chassis provided the composed road manners that became a hallmark of the 190 range. This later 2.3-liter version offered a more mature interpretation of the model than the earlier cars.
The 1988–1991 Mercedes 190 E 2.3 uses a naturally aspirated 2.3-liter inline-four producing 130 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 10.0 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 10.3 seconds. Top speed reaches 122 mph, combining smooth four-cylinder performance with classic Mercedes-Benz refinement and everyday usability.
