The Mercedes 190 D introduced the W201's diesel character in a compact sedan package, combining the understated styling and careful engineering of the 190 range with an economical naturally aspirated diesel engine. Its four-door body and five-seat cabin provided practical everyday usability, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive retained the traditional mechanical character of Mercedes-Benz. The 190 D was designed more for efficient, dependable motoring than outright speed, making it a distinctive member of the early W201 family.
The 1983–1988 Mercedes 190 D uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four diesel producing 71 hp and 91 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 17.5 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 18.1 seconds. Top speed reaches 99 mph, giving the compact sedan a straightforward combination of diesel efficiency, traditional rear-wheel-drive dynamics and Mercedes-Benz refinement.
