The Mercedes 190 D 2.5 brought the W201's larger five-cylinder diesel engine into its later production years, combining understated styling with the durability and practicality associated with Mercedes-Benz diesel models. Its four-door body and five-seat cabin made it well suited to everyday and long-distance driving, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive preserved the traditional mechanical character of the 190 family. With its naturally aspirated diesel powertrain, this version focused on relaxed, dependable motoring rather than outright performance.
The 1988–1993 Mercedes 190 D 2.5 uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-five diesel producing 93 hp and 117 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 14.6 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 15.1 seconds. Top speed reaches 108 mph, giving the sedan a practical combination of diesel efficiency, relaxed performance and classic Mercedes-Benz refinement.
