The Mercedes 190 continued its early W201 development in 1984 with a revised two-liter engine and the understated design that helped establish Mercedes-Benz in the compact sedan segment. Its clean four-door body, five-seat cabin and rear-wheel-drive layout combined everyday practicality with the solid engineering expected from the marque. The compact proportions were complemented by a longitudinal front-engine arrangement and multi-link rear suspension, giving the 190 a composed character that set it apart from many contemporary entry-level sedans.
The 1984–1988 Mercedes 190 uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four producing 104 hp and 122 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 12.0 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 12.4 seconds. Top speed reaches 115 mph, giving the sedan a straightforward combination of smooth performance, traditional rear-wheel-drive dynamics and practical Mercedes-Benz refinement.
