The Mercedes 190 E marked the beginning of a new chapter for Mercedes-Benz, bringing the brand’s engineering philosophy into a more compact sedan. Introduced as part of the W201 family, it combined clean, understated styling with a carefully engineered chassis and the rear-wheel-drive layout that became central to the 190’s character. Its four-door body and five-seat cabin made it a practical executive sedan, while the longitudinal engine placement and multi-link rear suspension gave it a composed and refined driving character for its era.
The 1982–1988 Mercedes 190 E uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four producing 120 hp and 131 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 10.2 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 10.5 seconds. Top speed reaches 121 mph, giving the original 190 E a balanced combination of smooth performance, classic Mercedes-Benz refinement and everyday usability.
