The Mercedes 190 marked the beginning of the W201 era, bringing Mercedes-Benz engineering into a more compact sedan package without abandoning the brand’s traditional rear-wheel-drive layout. Its clean, understated design, four-door body and five-seat cabin gave it practical appeal, while the front-mounted longitudinal engine and carefully engineered suspension helped establish the composed road manners that would become a defining feature of the 190 family. As the original model introduced in 1982, it laid the foundation for one of Mercedes-Benz’s most important compact sedans.
The 1982–1984 Mercedes 190 uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four producing 89 hp and 122 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 12.8 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 13.2 seconds. Top speed reaches 109 mph, giving the compact sedan a straightforward combination of everyday practicality, traditional rear-wheel-drive dynamics and Mercedes-Benz refinement.
