The Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution was developed as a high-performance version of the W201, combining the compact dimensions of the 190 with a more focused sporting character. Its four-door body and five-seat cabin retained the practicality of the standard sedan, while the naturally aspirated 16-valve engine, rear-wheel drive and performance-focused chassis gave it a much more serious enthusiast appeal. The Evolution became an important part of Mercedes-Benz’s motorsport-inspired performance history and laid the foundation for the even more powerful Evolution II.
The 1989 Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four producing 201 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 7.3 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 7.5 seconds. Top speed reaches 146 mph, giving the compact sedan an impressive combination of everyday practicality, rear-wheel-drive balance and performance.
