The Mercedes 190 E continued to establish Mercedes-Benz in the compact executive sedan market, combining clean, understated styling with the engineering quality and composed road manners expected from the brand. Built on the W201 platform, its four-door body and five-seat cabin offered practical everyday usability, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive preserved the traditional mechanical character of Mercedes-Benz sedans. By the late 1980s, the 190 E had become a mature and well-balanced member of the Mercedes-Benz range.
The 1988–1991 Mercedes 190 E uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four producing 116 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 10.2 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 10.5 seconds. Top speed reaches 121 mph, giving the compact sedan a refined balance of smooth performance, rear-wheel-drive dynamics and everyday practicality.
