The Mercedes 190 D 2.2 brought a larger naturally aspirated diesel engine to the early W201 range, combining the compact proportions of the 190 with Mercedes-Benz's emphasis on durability and practical everyday motoring. Its understated four-door design and five-seat cabin made it a sensible executive sedan, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive retained the traditional mechanical character of the 190 family. Rather than chasing outright performance, the 190 D 2.2 focused on dependable, economical transportation with the solid road manners expected from Mercedes-Benz.
The 1983–1984 Mercedes 190 D 2.2 uses a naturally aspirated 2.2-liter inline-four diesel producing 72 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 17.8 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 18.4 seconds. Top speed reaches 99 mph, giving the sedan a practical combination of diesel efficiency, rear-wheel-drive dynamics and classic Mercedes-Benz refinement.
