The Mercedes 190 E 1.8 represented the W201 in its later years, offering a compact and refined interpretation of Mercedes-Benz’s executive sedan formula. Its clean styling, four-door body and five-seat cabin emphasized practicality, while the longitudinal front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive retained the traditional mechanical character of the 190 range. With a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and carefully balanced chassis, the 190 E 1.8 focused more on smooth everyday driving and efficiency than outright performance, making it an understated member of the W201 family.
The 1990–1993 Mercedes 190 E 1.8 uses a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter inline-four producing 108 hp and 111 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 11.9 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 12.3 seconds. Top speed reaches 115 mph, giving the compact sedan a composed combination of everyday usability, rear-wheel-drive dynamics and Mercedes-Benz refinement.
